Overview
In this workshop we aim to increase awareness of issues relating to unwanted pregnancies and, in particular, making young people aware of the social problems and life-changing circumstances that surround them
The concept is to move away from the idealistic view that some young people may have about pregnancy, and provide a hard-hitting reality check, by clearly identifying the possible consequences of unprotected sex and helping young people understand how the consequences of one seemingly small decision can impact the rest of their lives
Issues covered include:
- Becoming a young parent
- The risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections
- Identification of different infections.
The workshop also looks into the effects that raising a child has on the family, friends, future and personal lives of people around a teenage parent. Students are also signposted to the location of free advice and support services, contraceptive services and STI testing.
Outcomes:
- Help students understand that perceived social pressure doesn’t mean they have to do things they’re uncomfortable with or not ready for
- Help students understand the consequences of unprotected sex, and the precautions they should be taking
- Help students understand the long-term emotional, financial and physical impact pregnancy can have on mum, dad, and their respective families
Approach
We use a range of methods to ensure the content is accessible to and engaging for students of all learning-types and abilities:
- Roleplay and re-enactment gets them interacting with the subject physically and mentally
- Guest speakers (actors and actresses) help students understand that drinking too much stops you being able to remember what happened - and the dangers of this
- Video footage - created by media students to bring to life a realistic depiction of how teenage pregnancy plays out between mum, dad and their friends and families
- Group discussion allows the students to clarify uncertainty and talk about the subject with our trainers and their peers in a safe environment
Using a scenario based on real life, students are tested on the different situations that they could face from having unprotected sex
Other information
In our experience, these workshops are most effective when tailored to their audience, so we like to work with schools so we can design the workshops with the most appropriate content, focusing on relevant areas for the students involved.
After the session, we provide the school with an independently audited statistical analysis and a cognitive behavioural report on the assessments made during the sessions.
