Mens Health Week - NHS Devon - Raising Men's Health Awareness

Men's health

Aim

To develop effective ways of informing men in Exeter city with long-term medical conditions to increase their capacity for self-care.

Project

SOS UK created an information page with NHS facilities, details of the project and links to NHS Direct, GUM clinics and other services offered by Devon PCT. Safe underwear and 3,000 anti-drink spiking lids page were distributed in social venues across Exeter over Men’s Health Week. A proportion of products were distributed to appropriate agencies and partners. The remainder were targeted by the use of SOS UK models at social events in Exeter and recorded by means of a photographer.

"Men are a notoriously difficult group to reach regarding their health, often only coming to see us as a last resort. We are keen to work proactively with SOS Global to outreach information and change this harmful culture.”

Outcome

20,000 initial new user hits were recorded to the NHS PCT walk –in information pages following the campaign. With an on-going increase of 50 - 100 new visitors per week and approximately 1,000 persons contacted on a one to one basis during the event. Undoubtedly the campaign was a sustained success, with hard to reach and socially excluded groups being made of the aware of local facilities and services.
